Sing A New Song – Diligence And Completing the Work

For those of you who know me, you know that I love making music. When I was younger I spent many years writing, performing, and traveling. I moved to Nashville, had songs on the radio, and was able to write and play with some great names in the industry. Doors were starting to open and I was able to see behind the scenes of the music business. And that is when everything turned around for me, and I knew that something needed to change.

Scripture:
“Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things; his right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him.” – Psalm 98:1

Observation/Application:
While me and those near to me in the business were quite pleased with the success that we were experiencing by the world’s standards, I knew that I had much work to do by God’s standard. I didn’t like what I saw behind the music industry curtain. And while it was not all bad, I saw enough to realize that if you play in the pig pen, you are going to get stuff on you, and you are going to come out with a distinct stench.

As God continued to work on me, I realize that if there was anyone or anything worthy of song, if there was anything worth celebrating, it was Jesus Christ and God’s love for us. We have him to thank for our very creation, for the air that we breath, for the life that we lead. Suddenly my desire to make music for the world was gone in an instant. But the desire to make a NEW song was birthed in it’s place.

It was a tough transition for me because I wasn’t sure what I could write that would be worthy of and honorable. I wanted my first song for the Lord to be my best song. But that crippled me for a long time until God helped me realize that I was getting in my own way. So I have started writing songs again, because if we are to sing a new song to the Lord, then we need new songs to sing.

Today’s scripture is a great encouragement for me. Even though these songs are not fully complete, I am super excited about what God is doing in my life musically again. Just a few weeks ago I picked up the bass guitar for the first time and God just gave me the skill to play it pretty much immediately. I picked it up at 5pm and by 7pm I was playing all 5 brand new songs with the band, and 3 days later I was performing them in front of the church. Now they are scheduling me to play bass every week. How amazing is it to know that God can put His hand on you and with just one touch give you a skill or talent in an instant? God is so good.

A pastor at a church that I have attended recently spoke about diligence and completing the work set out before us. Between this sermon and today’s scripture, I know that God is speaking directly to me. He is saying, “Matt – finish the work already.” So I am asking all my brothers and sisters in Christ for encouragement, and to help hold me accountable to finish the work. And while I am encouraged, I hope that today’s reflection encourages you on whatever God is doing in your life.

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

#Sing-To-The-Lord-A-New-Song

Prayer:
Dear heavenly Father. Thank you for a good night of rest. There is so much that needs to be done Lord, give me the strength to continue your work in me. Give me the peace of mind, the rest, the wisdom, everything that I need to complete these new songs for your glory. Help me to continue to seek you first and to be diligent in the study of your Word. Bless my time and my efforts, that they may be fruitful and that I might get more done in 5 minutes than most people do all day. I know that you are the Father of time, and that all things are possible through You. Unleash the power of your Holy Spirit within me, and guide my every step. Let my every action, my every word, my every thought be blessed, that your Will be done, on earth as in heaven. We give you all the honor and glory and praise, in Jesus mighty name. Amen.
