The Problem With Tightening Our Grip

Like sand in the palm of our hands, sometimes the tighter that we hold onto things the faster they slip through our fingers. For Star Wars fans out there, a similar parallel could be drawn to the words of Princess Leia who advises Governor Tarkin before her attempted execution, “The more you tighten your grip, Tarkin, the more star systems will slip through your fingers.”

Scripture
“When Jesus heard this, he said to him, ‘You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.’ When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was very wealthy.” – Luke 18:22,23

Observation/Application
When Jesus is telling this ruler about what he could do to inherit eternal life, Jesus helps highlight this ruler’s love for wealth. But today’s scripture is about so much more than physical wealth. For the ruler it was wealth, but for others it could be something else that we might place above God.

Exodus 20:3 tells us very clearly that “You shall have no other gods before me.” Our God loves us more than we could ever imagine, and wants nothing more than our love for Him. He gave us life and our very breath. He is the truth the light and the way. He overcame death and the grave. With God, we too can overcome death and the grave. With God, we can spend eternity in heaven. With God all things are possible. With God, our lives can be better than we ever could imagine.

What are we holding onto so tightly that is holding us back from God’s best? What do we put before God? Let us love the Lord our God with all our heart, all our mind, all our soul, ad all our strength. Let us fully surrender ourselves to Him. And let us know and trust that when we do, God’s promise can be fulfilled in our lives.

Prayer:
Dear heavenly Father, thank you for your Word today. Thank you for loving us more than we could ever imagine. Thank you for our very life, and our very breath. Help us to trust in you Lord. We believe Lord, help our unbelief. Help us to loosen our grip on the things of this world. Help us to know that there is so much more to life than we might see with our eyes. Let us seek you first Lord, and reveal the unseen to us Lord. Fill us with all of your goodness. We surrender to you Lord. Purify our hearts and minds. Direct our steps. Make us new. We give you all the honor and glory, in Jesus mighty name. Amen.
