The Problem With A Lukewarm Drink

Water is absolutely essential that we get water in our bodies to stay alive. It is both refreshing and life giving. But there are two kinds of drinks that really satisfy – an ice cool drink on a smoldering hot day, and a hot cup of coffee or on a bitter cold winter morning. Not only does this drink provide us with the water that our bodies need, it provides us so much more. On a hot summer day an ice cold drink cools us down and refreshes us in a much different way than a lukewarm cup of water would. And on a brisk winter morning a nice hot drink warms your shivering bones from the inside out, much different than the kind of experience that we would get from drinking a glass of water that is lukewarm. That is exactly what God wants of us, a life that is so much better than being lukewarm – a life that truly satisfies, and is satisfied.

Scripture: “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked.” – Rev 3:15-17

Observation/Application
Today’s scripture e is written about the church of Laodicea, who had become comfortable in their lives. They thought that they were rich because they had acquired wealth, and thought they had everything that they needed. Because they were comfortable, they were blind to what they were missing in their lives. They were missing this coolness factor on a hot day, and this warming factor on a bitter cold day. They were lukewarm, and they didn’t know what they were missing. They were blind to the life that existed beyond just being comfortable, with being lukewarm. The level of joy, and peace, and satisfaction that only come through the love of our Father and knowing the Lord Jesus Christ.

How are we living our lives? Are we cold, hot, or somewhere in the middle? What kind of life are we missing out on, because we are comfortable, because we have really all that we need physically. Do we get bored and constantly seek more? Do we find ourselves seeking entertainment constantly in the form of likes and shares and apps and games? Are we watching movies and television and longing for a life like the ones we see on the screen? Or are we writing our own life story by living each and every day to the fullest and in a way that a movie will be made about us?

Are we sitting on the couch, fat and comfortable, while the amazing life that God intends for each and every one of us passes us by?  Are we thinking that we thinking that we have it all, when we are really blind to the amazing life that God has intended for each of us? Is our relationship with our significant other full of zest and excitement? Or is it lukewarm, on the verge of being replaced by a more refreshing drink? Is our attitude so positive and infections that others are inspired by our passion? Do we truly cherish those around us, or do we only truly feel for them and cherish them when they are lying on their death bed, or when something tragic happens like they are kidnapped and missing from our homes? Or are we so comfortable that we take everything and everyone around us for granted, because when one of these other scenarios happen our temperature surely changes?

Real talk – everyone wants to be hot or cold, filled with passion and purpose. And everyone wants to be around someone who is hot or cold, not lukewarm. And that is the kind of relationship that God wants for us, and with us. Let us pray that we can be more than lukewarm, full of zest and life, happiness and joy, peace and contentment, strength and courage, love and purpose – the kind of life that God intends for each and every one of us.

Prayer:
Dear heavenly Father, thank you for your Word this morning. We come to you asking that you make us hot or cold Father God, that our lives be more than lukewarm. We ask that you fill us full of your goodness so that we can satisfy, and be satisfied, in a way that can’t be compared or outdone. We ask that you help remove our blind spots and help us realize that our comfortable lives are actually causing us to be lukewarm and holding us back from the kind of amazing life that you have intended for each and every one of us. We thank you so very much for the revelation that comes through your Word. Give us strength and resolve to seek you first each and every day, as we give you all the honor and glory. We receive your blessings and all of your promise now, on earth as it is in heaven, in Jesus mighty name. Amen.
