Not Being Consumed By Temporary Things

In today’s scripture, Paul is talking to the church in Corinth about being sexual relations, and relationships between husbands and wives. He explains that aside from the direction of the Holy Spirit, our urges are of the flesh and of this world. And since things of the flesh including our bodies are not eternal, they are going to pass away. So Paul is helping them (and us) see the bigger picture which is of eternity and has eternal value, instead of being consumed by things that are temporary in this world.

Scripture:
“What I mean, brothers and sisters, is that the time is short. From now on those who have wives should live as if they do not; those who mourn, as if they did not; those who are happy, as if they were not; those who buy something, as if it were not theirs to keep; those who use the things of the world, as if not engrossed in them. For this world in its present form is passing away.” – 1 Corinthians 7:29-31

Observation/Application:
So no matter what we go through in life, no matter what hard times life throws our way, whether it be divorce, financial struggles, health issues, whatever, it is important that we stay focused on God and look at things from an eternal perspective. Jesus Christ came that we might have life and have it abundantly. And if we fix our eyes on Jesus, we can overcome anything that this world brings our way. Our God can move mountains. And having a relationship with God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ will help us to walk in love and peace, with wisdom and understanding, and joy. Keeping our eyes on Jesus helps us realize that greatest prize is not the tangible and temporary things of this world, but the beautiful and perfect and pure things that are unseen and of eternal value. No matter what our current or future circumstances, we can know that the ultimate freedom, and the greatest blessings are yet to come. How amazing is our God and His Word!

Prayer:
Dear heavenly Father, thank you for Your Word. Thank you for using people like Paul and other brothers and sisters to inspire us to want to do more, and to be more, for You. Thank you for your wisdom and guidance. Help us to walk in your Ways. Fill us now with your Holy Spirit, that we might be a light in this world, and bring more people to You. We receive you into our hearts and minds, and honor you with everything that we do. We give you all the honor and glory and praise, in Jesus mighty name. Amen.
