Faith, Fear, Doubt, And Crying Out

Today’s verse comes from a time where Jesus walked on water. “Come” Jesus says, and Peter obeys the call and gets out of the boat and begins to walk on water. He displays the perfect obedience and faith that we should aspire to when Jesus calls us. Miracles happen when we trust in Jesus! But the weight of the storm and the fears of the flesh begin to creep in and Peter begins sinking. Then Peter cries out, “Lord save me”, and we read today’s chosen verse…

Scripture:
“Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. ‘You of little faith,’ he said, ‘why did you doubt’.” – Matthew 14:31

Observation/Application:
When we become afraid, that is where we begin to sink. Fear at its most basic form means that we are not trusting in Lord. Fear is the opposite of faith. We cannot be full of both. So when we are feeling fear, we can do exactly what Peter did and cry out to Jesus. When we seek the Lord and are obedient to his calling he will always be there for us. He will always be there to reach out and lift us up when we cry out to him. Now that doesn’t mean that we won’t face any storms, feel the weight of the flesh, and have our faith tested. But when we are shaken by life’s circumstances, Peter provides a great example of what we are to do.

So if we are hurting, if we are suffering, if we are failing in some area like relationships, at work, at home, with our weight or our health, or if we are lost, or if we just feel like something is missing, cry out to Jesus. He tells us to have faith and not doubt. He will be there with arms outstretched to lift us up and catch us when we are falling. Our heavenly Father, the creator of all things, maker of all things, Almighty and all powerful, all knowledgeable, all loving God has got us. We just need to cry out to Him, praying more and more earnestly, and believe.

Prayer:
Dear heavenly Father, thank you for another day. It is a beautiful morning, and the day is already at hand. Today is going to be a very busy day, full of business and labor and many decisions will need to be made today. Give us wisdom and peace to walk through the fire, and respond according to your Will. We thank you for another day to walk on this earth in your Presence. Help us stay close to you. In Jesus mighty name. Amen.
